A letter to my daughter on her 3rd birthday

A gratitude post for my tiny human

Me enjoying a sunset on the beach with my daughter
Baba, can you hold onto some sand for me?

I am three, hear me,

Cookies, chaos, naps, repeat...

Ruler of the spree!

Dear Zoey,

It has been a delight to see you grow and how you’re getting more and more independent.

You have outgrown my arms and now sleep on the bed instead of my lap. Sometimes, I worry (in a selfish but good way!) you won't need me for the little things anymore - and it already makes me feel nostalgic.

These past three years have been pure joy and I am grateful for the beautiful moments we have created together.

A thank you letter for a 3 year young you seems a bit stretched, but you have no idea how much you have taught us already - making us better as you are growing.

So here it goes…

Thank you for slowing us down.

You are growing so independent now, wanting to do everything on your own - from tying your shoes to coming down the stairs. It slows us down sometimes, making us late to get ready or reach places. But that’s how you learn, and I wouldn’t want it any other way.

Thank you for slowing us down, because - what's the hurry, really?

Thank you for reminding us to be in the NOW.

I love how you are present in any situation - enjoying the activity. Be it playing on a slide, taking a bike ride, or just taking a stroll. You remind us to be more present and help us enjoy our present moments.

Thank you for your compassion.

Whenever someone around you is unwell, you never forget to check on them the next day. It’s a beautiful reminder, especially to us adults, who often lose this sense of presence while being caught up in our own busy lives. It takes a big heart to show such compassion - and yours is as vast and deep as the ocean!

Thank you for reminding us of the beauty in noticing and appreciating the little things around us.

I love how you find beauty in the tiniest of the things and moments. Be a dish someone cooks for you, or a crayon someone gets you, or a dress someone wears or just the gentle breeze flowing through your hair!

Thank you for the warm hugs from time to time

And those warm hugs you give, when we do something you like? Thank you for those, and also for restoring our faith in the power of hugs.

Thank you for your curiosity.

For your questions, and then some connected questions, and then some more of them. It is your curiosity and hunger to learn new skills that taught us that this life is rather interesting.

Thank you for helping us in keeping things simple.

While we wait for those big days or vacations to finally let-loose and have some fun, you keep reminding us that fun can be found in the simple daily things all around us. Thank you for your silliness and for bringing out ours too.

Thank you for being assertive and direct.

Expressing your likes and dislikes, creating boundaries and more importantly, being direct to someone is a great skill to have in this people pleasing world. I admire your confidence and I love how you express it.

Thank you for your tantrums.

It’s a reality check for our patience, showing us there is always room to improve and stay calm, even when you insist on doing things your way. It’s also a reminder that these little tantrums are just how you express yourself at this tiny age.

And lastly, thank you for being yourself!

As you grow, you will meet plenty of "adults", eager to impart their so-called gyaan.

Let me tell you something about us adults - we are often struggling to figure out our own lives, yet we jump at every chance to offer advices & instructions to others, as if we have it all figured out.

Don’t let us put you down. Listen, but always form your own opinions and follow your path.

I absolutely feel privileged to be your parent.

To more learnings and growing alongside you. 💪

Happy Birthday, Chikku! ❤️
